Custom coffee tables: solid wood, modern and sized to your sofa
At Formo Atelier we build custom coffee tables in our Tirana workshop: solid oak, walnut and ash tables, modern lacquered tables in white or any colour, round and oval tables for small living rooms, nesting sets and tables with a drawer or a shelf, each one cut to the height of your sofa seat and the length of your sofa. A coffee table is the piece everyone reaches for a dozen times a day, which is why the catalogue one is always a little too high, too low or in the way.

What we build
Coffee tables for every sofa and every room
Every order starts with three numbers: the height of your sofa seat, the length of the sofa, and the passage you need to keep around the table. The shape, the wood and the storage follow from those.

Solid wood coffee tables
Oak, walnut or ash tops of 30 to 40 mm, oiled or lacquered, on a solid frame or a block base. The table that gets sanded back to new in twenty years rather than replaced.
Modern lacquered coffee tables
Matt or satin lacquered MDF in white, sand, graphite or any colour you bring, with no visible joints: the clean modern table for a light living room, made to the size the sofa needs.
Round and oval coffee tables
For small living rooms, corner sofas and homes with children: no corners to walk into, easier to pass around, and a diameter chosen from the sofa rather than from a catalogue.
Coffee tables with storage
A drawer for remotes and chargers, an open shelf for books and magazines, or a lift-up top over a closed compartment, so the top itself stays clear.
Nesting and side tables
Two or three tables that slide under one another and come out when guests arrive, and side tables at the same height as the sofa arm, built in the same wood as the main table.
Tables matched to the rest of the room
A coffee table in the same oak or walnut as your TV unit, dining table or bookcase, with the same edge and the same finish, so nothing in the room looks bought separately.
Materials and finishes
Materials for coffee tables
A coffee table takes glasses, feet, laptops and toys, so the top is chosen for the wear it will see and the base for stability. These are the families we build coffee tables from; the MDF vs melamine guide explains what to ask for.

Solid wood
Oak, beech, walnut and ash, selected and dried for interior use. For worktops, table tops, frames and handles, where the surface has to take knocks and be sanded back to new.

Wood veneer
A thin layer of real oak, walnut or ash bonded to a stable board core. The look and touch of solid wood with far less movement, so large doors and panels stay flat for years.

MDF (lacquered or moisture-resistant)
A dense, uniform fibreboard that machines cleanly. Moisture-resistant grades go into carcasses near water; lacquered MDF gives smooth matt or satin fronts in any colour, with no visible joints or grain.

Plywood
Cross-laminated wood layers, usually birch: light, very strong and stable. For shelves that must not sag, drawer boxes, exposed-edge shelving and joinery that shows its construction.

The right coffee table size, taken from your sofa
The height of a coffee table is decided by the sofa seat: level with it or up to 5 cm lower, which for most sofas means 40 to 45 cm. Higher and you lift your arm to set a glass down, lower and you bend for it every time. The length should be around two thirds of the sofa, so a 200 cm sofa is happiest with a table of 120 to 140 cm, and a corner sofa usually wants a square or a round one. We take those two numbers at the visit, along with the width of the room, and the drawing shows the table at its real size between the sofa and the TV unit.
The distance matters as much as the size. A coffee table sits best 40 cm from the sofa, 30 at the tightest and 45 at the most, and the passage on the far side needs 75 to 90 cm if people walk through the room there. A round table of 80 to 90 cm suits a room where the sofa faces the TV across a narrow floor, and a long low table suits a wide room where the sofa sits far from the wall. The full set of numbers, including the TV and dining table clearances, is in our living and dining room measurements guide.
A coffee table is the most touched surface in a living room, so the finish is chosen for the way you live: hardwax oil on solid oak or walnut can be repaired locally with a cloth and a sanding pad, while lacquer gives a sealed, wipeable top that suits a family with small children. The table is built to match the living and dining furniture we make for the same room, so the TV unit, the dining table and the coffee table share one wood, one edge profile and one finish.
How a coffee table is built in our workshop
The four order steps are above. This is what happens between the site visit and the day the table arrives at your sofa, and why the height is fixed before any board is cut.
Measuring the sofa and the room
Seat height and length of the sofa, the width of the room between the sofa and the TV unit, where people walk and where the rug ends. The visit ends with the maximum footprint the table can take.
Technical drawing
A plan and an elevation of the table at its real size in the room, with the top thickness, the base, any drawer or shelf and the edge profile. You approve the drawing before production.
Selecting and jointing the wood
For solid wood we pick the boards for colour and grain, dry them for interior use and joint them into a top that stays flat. Lacquered tables are cut from dense MDF and every edge is shaped and sealed before the first coat.
Finishing
Solid wood is sanded through the grits and oiled or lacquered; lacquered tops are sprayed and cured in the workshop, never on site. Drawer runners and felt pads go on before the table leaves.
Delivery
The table arrives finished and assembled, is placed at the distance agreed on the drawing, and leaves with care instructions for the finish you chose.
A master craftsman with 30 years at the bench
Sherif Hamiti built cabinetry and fine joinery in Athens for three decades before co-founding Formo. Every joint, edge and finish that leaves the workshop passes through his hands.
Technical drawings before the first cut
Ardineli Caci turns your idea into 3D models and production drawings that you approve first, so what gets built is exactly what you signed off, to the millimetre.
European boards and hardware, as standard
Moisture-resistant MDF and quality melamine boards for carcasses, solid wood and veneer where the design calls for it, soft-close hinges and runners on every door and drawer, edges sealed on every panel.
Installed by the team that built it
The same people who measured and built your piece install it: aligned fronts, adjusted hinges, sealed joints against the wall, and a handover inspection with you.
Cost
What affects the cost of custom furniture?
Every project is quoted from real site measurements, so there is no price list. These are the things that move a quote up or down:
Size and layout:
the number of units, tall columns, corners, islands and how much wall you are covering.
Materials:
melamine, lacquered or acrylic fronts, veneer and solid wood sit at very different points, and carcass and fronts can be mixed.
Hardware:
soft-close is standard; pull-out pantries, corner mechanisms, lift-up doors and internal organisers add to it.
Integration:
built-in appliances, lighting, sockets and ventilation planned into the cabinetry.
Site conditions:
walls out of square, pipes to work around, access and floor levels all affect the work on the day.
Questions
Common questions about custom coffee tables
How much does a custom coffee table cost?
The main factors are the wood or finish you choose, the size of the top, the base construction and any storage such as a drawer or a lift-up top. A small lacquered table and a large solid walnut table with a drawer sit far apart. Contact us and we will prepare a free, itemized quote.
How high should a coffee table be?
Level with the sofa seat or up to 5 cm lower, which for most sofas means 40 to 45 cm. We measure your sofa at the visit and set the height of the table from it, rather than choosing from a standard.
How big should the coffee table be for my sofa?
Around two thirds of the sofa length, placed 40 cm from it. A 180 cm sofa takes a table of about 120 cm, a 240 cm sofa one of about 160 cm, and a corner sofa usually wants a square or round table that both sides can reach. The drawing shows the table at its real size in your room before we build it.
Round or rectangular?
Round or oval for a small room, a corner sofa or a home with small children: no corners, easier to pass around. Rectangular for a long sofa in a wide room, where a low long table balances it. Both are built to the same numbers, so the choice is about the room and how you use it.
Solid wood or lacquered MDF?
Solid oak or walnut shows the grain, ages well and can be sanded and re-oiled at home. Lacquered MDF gives a smooth top in any colour with no visible joints and wipes clean, which suits a light modern living room and a family with children. Veneer sits in between: real wood on a stable core for large tops that must stay flat.
Can a coffee table have a drawer or storage?
Yes. A drawer on soft-close runners, an open shelf underneath, or a lift-up top over a closed compartment. Storage is planned in the drawing so the table keeps the same height and proportions.
I have a photo of a coffee table I like. Is that enough to start?
Yes, that is how most orders begin. We measure your sofa and room, adapt the idea to them in a technical drawing, and you approve the drawing before we cut. The idea stays yours; the building is ours.
Do you deliver coffee tables outside Tirana?
Yes. The table is built in the Tirana workshop and delivered finished and assembled by our own team across Albania: Durrës, Vlorë, Shkodër, Elbasan, Fier and beyond. Delivery is scheduled together with your quote.
