Custom hallway furniture: shoe cabinets, coat racks and entry closets
At Formo Atelier we build custom hallway furniture in our Tirana workshop: shoe cabinets and shoe racks at the depth your corridor can actually spare, coat racks with hooks and a mirror, benches with drawers and entry closets up to the ceiling, measured on site and installed by the team that built them. The hallway is the narrowest room in the house and the first one anyone sees, which is exactly why catalogue pieces so often end up in the way.

What we build
Everything the entrance has to hold
Every order starts with three numbers: the width of the corridor, the swing of the front door, and how many pairs of shoes and coats have to disappear. The pieces follow from those.

Shoe cabinets and shoe racks
Closed shoe cabinets with shelves or tilt-out flaps, open racks for the pairs in daily use, and a taller compartment for boots. The depth is chosen from your corridor, not from a standard module.
Coat racks and hall panels
Wall-mounted coat panels with hooks, a shelf for keys and a mirror, or a freestanding coat stand: the “portmanto” of Albanian hallways, built in the same finish as the rest of the set.
Entry closets to the ceiling
A closed column for winter coats, the vacuum cleaner and the ironing board, built wall to wall like our fitted wardrobes so the hallway looks like one calm surface.
Benches with drawers
A seat for putting shoes on, with drawers or an open shoe shelf underneath, sized so it does not narrow the passage.
Consoles and mirrors
A shallow console for post and keys with a mirror above it, the piece that makes a short corridor feel like an entrance hall.
Complete hallway sets
Shoe storage, coat panel, bench and mirror composed as one wall in one material, planned for narrow corridors, L-shaped entrances and the wall behind the door.
Materials and finishes
Materials for hallway furniture
A hallway piece is touched, kicked and wiped more than any other furniture in the house, so the surface has to forgive. These are the families we build hallway sets from; the MDF vs melamine guide explains what to ask for.

Melamine
Chipboard or MDF faced with a hard, printed melamine layer. Scratch- and moisture-resistant, easy to clean, and available in hundreds of wood and plain decors. Our standard for carcasses and the most practical choice for fronts.

MDF (lacquered or moisture-resistant)
A dense, uniform fibreboard that machines cleanly. Moisture-resistant grades go into carcasses near water; lacquered MDF gives smooth matt or satin fronts in any colour, with no visible joints or grain.

Wood veneer
A thin layer of real oak, walnut or ash bonded to a stable board core. The look and touch of solid wood with far less movement, so large doors and panels stay flat for years.

Solid wood
Oak, beech, walnut and ash, selected and dried for interior use. For worktops, table tops, frames and handles, where the surface has to take knocks and be sanded back to new.

Furniture for narrow corridors, built from the corridor’s numbers
Most Tirana apartments give the entrance a corridor of 100 to 120 cm, sometimes less, and a front door that swings into it. A catalogue shoe cabinet is 35 cm deep and leaves you sidestepping it every morning. Custom building lets the depth vary along the wall: 25 to 35 cm for the console so the corridor keeps its 90 cm of passage, 17 to 25 cm for tilt-out shoe cabinets in the tightest spot, a full 60 cm only where a coat closet fits without touching the door swing.
Inside the shoe cabinet we lay out shelves at 25 to 30 cm deep and 15 to 20 cm apart, with a taller section for boots, and we count your pairs at the visit so nothing ends up on the floor. Hooks go at 165 to 175 cm for adults and a second row at 100 to 120 cm if there are children, the bench seat sits at 40 to 45 cm, and the mirror is centred at 145 to 152 cm. The full set of numbers is in our room by room measurements guide.
Shoes bring in rain and dust, so every edge of a hallway piece is sealed with edge-banding, closed shoe cabinets get ventilation slots or a perforated back panel, and the pieces are fixed to the wall rather than resting against it. A hallway closet is built exactly like our fitted wardrobes: the same carcasses, hinges and soft-close hardware, cut to the wall you have.
How a hallway set is built in our workshop
The four order steps are above. This is what happens between the site visit and the day the set is fixed to your wall, and why the depth of every piece is decided before anything is cut.
Measuring the corridor
Width at three points, the swing of the front door and the interior doors, radiators, the electrical panel and the intercom, floor level and skirting. The visit ends with the maximum depth each part of the wall can take.
Technical drawing
An elevation of the wall with every piece at its own depth: shoe cabinet, coat panel, bench, mirror, closet. You approve the drawing before production, and the drawing is what the cut list comes from.
Cutting and edge-banding
Carcasses and fronts are cut from the drawing and every edge is sealed, including the bottom edges that meet wet shoes and the mop. Shelves for shoes are made in the same board so they never sag.
Hardware and finish
Tilt-out fittings, soft-close hinges, hooks, LED strips and mirror are fitted and adjusted in the workshop. Lacquered fronts are sprayed and cured before the set leaves.
Installation
The pieces are levelled, fixed to the wall and sealed at the floor, and the hooks and mirror are set at the heights agreed on the drawing. We hand the set over with you, coats and shoes already in place.
A master craftsman with 30 years at the bench
Sherif Hamiti built cabinetry and fine joinery in Athens for three decades before co-founding Formo. Every joint, edge and finish that leaves the workshop passes through his hands.
Technical drawings before the first cut
Ardineli Caci turns your idea into 3D models and production drawings that you approve first, so what gets built is exactly what you signed off, to the millimetre.
European boards and hardware, as standard
Moisture-resistant MDF and quality melamine boards for carcasses, solid wood and veneer where the design calls for it, soft-close hinges and runners on every door and drawer, edges sealed on every panel.
Installed by the team that built it
The same people who measured and built your piece install it: aligned fronts, adjusted hinges, sealed joints against the wall, and a handover inspection with you.
Cost
What affects the cost of custom furniture?
Every project is quoted from real site measurements, so there is no price list. These are the things that move a quote up or down:
Size and layout:
the number of units, tall columns, corners, islands and how much wall you are covering.
Materials:
melamine, lacquered or acrylic fronts, veneer and solid wood sit at very different points, and carcass and fronts can be mixed.
Hardware:
soft-close is standard; pull-out pantries, corner mechanisms, lift-up doors and internal organisers add to it.
Integration:
built-in appliances, lighting, sockets and ventilation planned into the cabinetry.
Site conditions:
walls out of square, pipes to work around, access and floor levels all affect the work on the day.
Questions
Common questions about custom hallway furniture
How much does custom hallway furniture cost?
The main factors are the length of the wall you are furnishing, how many pieces the set has, the fronts you choose and the hardware, such as tilt-out shoe fittings, LED lighting or a large mirror. A single shoe cabinet and a full wall with a closet sit far apart. Contact us and we will prepare a free, itemized quote.
How deep does a shoe cabinet need to be?
For shoes lying flat on shelves, 25 to 30 cm inside. Where the corridor cannot give that, a tilt-out cabinet holds the shoes at an angle in 17 to 25 cm of depth, which is why it is the usual answer for a corridor of 90 to 100 cm. We choose the type from the width we measure, not the other way round.
How many pairs of shoes will it hold?
A 60 cm wide shelf takes three to four pairs of adult shoes and a tilt-out flap two to three pairs, so a cabinet is planned from the number of pairs your family actually owns, with a taller compartment for boots. Tell us the count at the visit and the drawing will show where every pair goes.
Wall-mounted coat rack or a closed closet?
A coat panel with hooks keeps the daily coats within reach and makes the corridor feel wider, while a closed closet hides the winter coats, the vacuum and the ironing board. Most sets combine both: a closed column beside the door and an open panel with a mirror next to it.
I have a photo of a hallway I like. Is that enough to start?
Yes, that is how most orders begin. We measure the corridor, adapt the idea to your wall and door swing in a technical drawing, and you approve every drawing before we cut. The idea stays yours; the building is ours.
Will a closed shoe cabinet smell?
Not if it can breathe. Our closed shoe cabinets get ventilation slots in the plinth or a perforated back panel, and a shelf spacing that lets air move around the shoes. That is a detail flat-pack cabinets usually skip.
Do you build hallway furniture outside Tirana?
Yes. The set is built in the Tirana workshop and installed by our own team across Albania: Durrës, Vlorë, Shkodër, Elbasan, Fier and beyond. Measurement and installation are scheduled together with your quote.
